Nintendo: Wii U’s Name Isn’t the Problem

The Wii U is struggling mightily, but according to Nintendo of America’s President Reggie Fils-Aime, the hardware’s name isn’t the issue.

In a conversation with Kotaku, Fils-Aime notes that “the challenges [Nintendo is] facing with Wii U are not issues of the name. The issue is the lack of a steady rate of software launches to motivate the consumer to drive buzz and engagement and to highlight the wide variety of uses of the GamePad. That’s the issue.”

Fils-Aime also told Kotaku that the Wii U has only sold 1.5 million units in the United States to date, “about half of what the Wii did in the same amount of time,” according to the article.

While the Wii U’s name has no doubt been confusing to consumers, Nintendo’s uphill battle with its new console can indeed be largely attributed to a lack of games. The situation should improve this fall, however, as games like The Wonderful 101, Super Mario 3D World, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze launch alongside a fresh price cut.
