A prequel film for the BBC series Luther, starring Idris Elba, may be in the works, THR reports. Creator Neil Cross has finished the screenplay and says that he hopes to go into production on the film next year. “Idris is a brilliant leading man, and we’ve hoped to turn Luther into a movie for a long time,” Cross said at the Edinburgh TV Festival.

Elba is attached to star in the movie as John Luther in a story which would trace the character's early career as a cop while his marriage to Zoe is still intact. The final scene of the film will match the TV series' opening sequence. Warren Brown, Indira Varma and Steve Mackintosh are also on-board. Ruth Wilson’s Alice Morgan, meanwhile, may get her own spinoff series.
With the series ending after three years, the hope is that fans will be enthused to see more of Luther's story in one manner or another.
