When I visited the set of Parks and Recreation this week, I was surprised to find Chris Pratt shooting scenes, given he's also in the middle of playing the lead in Guardians of the Galaxy. I'd assumed he'd be missing all of the early episodes of Parks this season, but it turns out we'll still see Andy Dwyer, albeit perhaps not as much as usual. As it turned out, Pratt has quite the crazy schedule right now, flying back and forth between London, where Guardians is being filmed, and LA, where Parks is made.
During a break in shooting for the duo, I sat down with Pratt and his Parks and Rec costar Aubrey Plaza in Plaza's trailer for a conversation about the upcoming sixth season of the NBC comedy. While I'll be posting more from that chat in the weeks to come, near the end, we also spoke a bit about Pratt's experience working on Guardians of the Galaxy. Check out what he told me about the film's tone, working with director James Gunn and the potential to crossover with other Marvel movies - along with the questions Plaza had for Pratt as well and the very funny, tongue-in-cheek back and forth that followed between the two.
IGN: What’s the experience been like shooting Guardians of the Galaxy?
Pratt: It’s been really great. It’s hard to even put into words, especially for someone like me who has the vocabulary of a sixth-grader. It’s been a real trip. There’s a lot of super talented people working on it - artists. That’s what I always loved about comic books as a kid, the drawings. I didn’t ever read them that much. I wasn’t too big into the stories, but I loved the artwork and the covers. I’d like to draw a lot as a kid myself. So to see that, as they did making these comic books, they’ve hired the best artists in the world to do the concept artwork and to design these worlds. It’s so imaginative and so unreal. We’re working really hard and I’m in a bit of a daze, but I just can’t wait for people to see what we’re doing out there. I think that footage they showed at Comic-Con is very accurate to the movie that we’re making. I thought that footage was pretty badass.
IGN: It was! You expect with James Gunn that there will be an eclectic feel to it and a quirky sense of humor, which we saw in that footage. What is it like trying to figure out that tone on set and to make perhaps it a little skewed from what people are expecting from comic book movies?
Pratt: Yeah, I think tone is the major thing we have to accomplish, a consistent tone, going from silly and comedic to high-stakes drama and action, and everything in between. It’s really up to James, and I trust everything that he’s doing. I think we’re getting good stuff. I don’t know what to say about it other than it might be…Oh! It’s the greatest movie of the 21st century! That’s what I’ll say. It’ll be the Citizen Kane of movies other than Citizen Kane.
IGN: [Laughs] Oh, that's all! So has he changed, Aubrey? Has he come back saying “I’m a Marvel superhero. You should now treat me as such”?
Aubrey Plaza: Yeah, he is a total diva. He’s just ordering everyone around. It is so obnoxious! No, he’s the same.
IGN: He’s not having you refer to him as Star-Lord?
Plaza: No. Who’s Star-Lord? Is that your character?
Pratt: Yeah.
Plaza: I don’t read comics.
IGN: James has said Guardians is a pretty self-contained story and it quite literally takes place far away from the rest of the Marvel movies. But Marvel’s into long-term planning and they’ve got all these interweaving of the movies and characters. Are you hopeful that a couple movies from now you might be teaming up with some Avengers and maybe fighting alongside Iron Man or Cap?
Pratt: Man, that would be really cool. What’s nice is that it is all the same universe. Because it falls under the Marvel umbrella, there is the possibility, just like in the comic books, that these stories could intersect.
Plaza: Do you get to have sex with an alien?
Pratt: Yes.
Plaza: What!?
Pratt: A couple.
Plaza: Cool. Have you shot those scenes yet?
Pratt: I can’t get too much into what we’ve shot.
Plaza: All right. Will you show me later?
Pratt: Yeah, I’ll show you. So yeah, it’s exciting to think that. A lot of it’s just going to depend on what people think of the movie and if it makes sense for Marvel to keep making more of them. But I sure hope it does because I’ve never done anything like it. I hope they make ten of them.
IGN: You’ve got such an interesting cast. Is it just kind of a fun to look around and think, “Wow, look at this group of people all working alongside each other”?
Pratt: You know, the novelty of it wears off almost immediately, and it’s overtaken by the idea that we’ve got a ton of f**king work to do. We’re just getting after it. But every once in awhile, you have to stop and look around and take a moment and be like, “Oh my God, this is a moment in time that this may be the greatest film set I’ll ever be on.” So you want to enjoy that.
Plaza: Do you eat caviar for lunch?
Pratt: Only caviar. Do they have caviar here?
Plaza: No, Chris.
Pratt: F**k this.
Plaza: We are in the f**king Valley.
Pratt: Get the f**k out of your trailer.
Plaza: F**k you!
Guardians of the Galaxy opens August 1st, 2014.
