Verizon's Low-Cost 'Max' Plans Require Edge Upgrade

Verizon has apparently just launched a set of monthly data plans, aimed at customers who are still grandfathered into unlimited data packages. As reported by Droid Life, Verizon Max offers impressive savings, but you'll also need to sign up for Verizon Edge and subsequently lose your unlimited data allotment.

The new Max tiers offer 6GB of wireless data for $30 a month, or $50 a month for an 8GB plan that includes tethering. The plans are presented by Verizon as a way for unlimited data users to take advantage of Edge--which allows an upgrade after six months and 50 percent of the smartphone's price paid--and still get a considerable data plan for a comparatively low cost.

Of course, whether or not you'll see Verizon Max as a decent substitute for your unlimited data is in the eye of the beholder. The new Edge program has just gone live this week, but the upgrade-ready plan requires a hefty commitment to pay off the cost of a new phone atop the subsidies that already exist in your monthly plan.
