This week is a little light, but we’re also on the precipice of Nintendo’s next retail Wii U release and the whole jam-packed fall schedule. If you like games that are bonkers, insane, and crazy, then maybe check out The Wonderful 101, the latest from Nintendo and Platinum Games. If something slower is more your speed, then the Etrian Odyssey demo might be your jam. Can’t wait for The Wind Waker HD? Then prep your Wii U for hardcore Zelda action with the series’ first sequel Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. The 3DS Virtual Console even has the platform’s only football release in 2013 in the NES version of Tecmo Bowl. If all of this new stuff isn’t your speed, then check out some sales on some fine games released in the past year or so.
The Wonderful 101 ($59.99, Available September 15)
The second-to-last launch window Wii U game is almost upon us, as Nintendo and Platinum Games’ The Wonderful 101 is launching in North America this Sunday. From Bayonetta and Viewtiful Joe Director Hideki Kamiya, Wonderful 101 is a frenetic brawler where you control up to 100 heroes to fend off aliens and save the world. It’s got a lengthy single-player campaign, some five-player multiplayer, and an intricate combat system that has oodles of depth.
Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl (Available September 16)
Check out the opening moments of the latest Etrian Odyssey game two weeks before it comes out on 3DS. Etrian Odyssey Untold is actually a remake of the first entry in the series, which debuted on the DS in 2007. New to the fold is a predefined Story mode, which includes lavish animated cutscenes. This demo is the start of the adventure, and if you decide to buy Etrian Odyssey Untold, you can transfer your save from the demo to the main game.
Tecmo Bowl ($4.99)
You can still technically play as Bo Jackson in the 3DS Virtual Console release of the NES version of Tecmo Bowl. However, get used to him just being referred to as #34, since this emulated edition of the famed football game doesn’t have any of the player names. Still, it’s Tecmo Bowl, and if you have fond memories of playing this classic sports game, you can probably fill in the names yourself.
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link ($4.99)
Zelda II is still the biggest change-up in series history. Eschewing the top-down adventuring of the original, The Adventure of Link is more of an action RPG as you level up Link’s abilities in a mix of top-down exploration and 2D side-scrolling dungeon crawling. It’s unforgiving, but fortunately the Wii U version has save states, so if you can temper your frustration if you’re new to the 1988 NES game. Remember, if you bought this on Wii Virtual Console, you can upgrade to the Wii U version for $1.
Toki Tori 2 Update and Sale
Hot off the heels of a huge update that transformed the game’s name to Toki Tori 2+, Two Tribes’ latest work is on sale in the Wii U eShop from now until September 19. You can pick up the game for $8.99, discounted from its regular $14.99 price. The update adds more songs, additional puzzles, and much more.
Super Little Acorns 3D Turbo Sale
This cute platformer that stars a squirrel comes from developers who have worked on Perfect Dark and DJ Hero, and it’s now half price at $3.99 until October 2.
Bike Rider DX Sale
Bike Rider DX, which was a hot seller in Japan, will be on sale for $2.99 from now until October 10. If you like Trials HD, then Bike Rider DX might be a worthy sale to bite on.
Bit.Trip Saga Sale
The 3DS compilation of Gaijin Games’ original Bit.Trip series is now only $4.99 on the eShop starting September 1. CommanderVideo and the gang will only be this cheap until September 15, though, so act fast. Seriously, it’s got Bit.Trip Runner in it, and that game is worth the $5 by itself.
Letter Challenge ($2.99)
Do you like word games? If so, Letter Challenge has four different ones for you to choose from, including WordBlast, Pickletter, Hangman, and Word Finder. With a library of more than 100,000 words, you hopefully won’t come across the same word twice.
Tales to Enjoy! Little Red Riding Hood ($1.99)
Tales to Enjoy! Puss in Boots ($1.99)
These DSiWare titles, also playable on 3DS, are interactive stories about the whimsical adventurer Little Red Riding Hood and the stalwart hero Puss in Boots, respectively. Kids can even make their own story using the objects from the story and compete in mini-games.
Neal Ronaghan is a die-hard Green Bay Packers fan, but would oddly play as the Chicago Bears in the original Tecmo Bowl since it only had 12 teams and Walter Payton is pretty rad. Root for the Packers with him on Twitter and check his other writing out on Nintendo World Report.
