Owners of Xbox 360 consoles manufactured between 2006 and 2008 are claiming that Grand Theft Auto V is causing the console to crash.
Kotaku reports that a number of gamers who own an Xbox 360 manufactured or refurbished between 2006 and 2008 have experienced issues with freezing and, ultimately, crashing consoles.
Problems apparently start following cutscenes after the first mission, though it's not clear what's causing them. Some people have suggested a small hard drive could be the culprit, but users who have fitted a larger hard drive are apparently being hit by it as well.
A number of possible solutions are being thrown about, though it doesn't seem that any have been proven to work. One that's meant to have a fairly high success rate sees you delete all game data, clear your system cache three times then delete marketplace data from storage system items before unplugging your console for three minutes. After this, you should install disc 1 and power off without inserting disc 2, then restart the console and install the second disc. That's advice from Xbox Live support though, and doesn't seem to consider Rockstar's guidelines about not installing both discs.
We've reached out to Rockstar to see if it will confirm the existence of the issue, and whether or not a solution is being sought. As soon as we hear back, we'll update this story.
