TGS: The PlayStation 4 Originally Had 4GB of RAM

The original PlayStation 4 design had 4GB of memory, and much of the decision to upgrade to 8GB was based on developer feedback, Sony has revealed at TGS.

Speaking with Gamespot, President of SCE Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida explained that the decision to upgrade was a business one, made easier by encouragement from developers.

"And because we chose expensive memory…we really liked the performance, but it's pricey, right? So going to 8GB was a bit of a business decision," said Yoshida. "But we were able to make that decision because of a lot of the feedback from developers."

The Xbox One also packs 8GB of memory. Recently, a number of anonymous industry insiders claimed the PlayStation 4 was around 50 percent faster than the Xbox One, a statement Microsoft subsequently refuted. "Xbox One architecture is much more complex than what any single figure can convey," a spokesperson told Kotaku.
