Rio director Carlos Saldanha is now in negotiations to replace Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) for 20th Century Fox's sci-fi movie Rust, based on Royden Lepp's 2011 graphic novel Rust: Visitor in the Field.
The story centers on a family of struggling farmers whose lives are changed when Jet Jones, a young boy with a jetpack, crashes into their barn while being chased by a decommissioned war robot. The family must then decide how to proceed.
Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada) wrote the adapted screenplay for Rust. Simon Kinberg will produce the film, with Aditya Sood and Archaia's Stephen Christy and PJ Bickett executive-producing.
According to The Wrap, Saldanha is currently meeting with the Rust team to discuss where they might go with the project. No reason was given for Cornish's departure.
