Injustice: Gods Among Us may have hit consoles months ago, but DC's digital comic book tie-in is still going strong. Issues of the series dominate the download charts on services like Comixology and Amazon week after week. That's even more impressive when you consider that the series is a prequel to the game. How much story could they really have to tell?
Quite a bit, as it turns out. Today is a case of good news/bad news for fans of the series. The bad news is that DC has revealed that today's digital chapter, Injustice #36, will be the last for 2013. The Injustice print comic will continue until it collects the final three digital chapters in December 2013. And there will also be the one-shot Injustice Annual #1, currently scheduled for release on November 13.
The good news is that there's still more to come after the annual. Writer Tom Taylor will return with new weekly installments of the series in January 2014. These new chapters will pick up right where Chapter 36 left off. Yes, that means the new series will still be a prequel to the game.
When asked for comment, Taylor said, "I said early on that we had a definite ending in mind for our story. I knew that the story we were telling in these 36 chapters was essentially the break-up of the World's Finest friendship. When Superman and Batman's relationship became irreparable, that's when our story would end. That tale is told now. However, we have another story to tell in the pages of Injustice, and that story will begin in January 2014."
DC told us that the temporary hiatus is partly intended to allow them to spotlight other upcoming digital projects, including Batman: Arkham Origins, Teen Titans GO!, and The Vampire Diaries.
