Pokemon X/Y Starter Evolutions, Customization Revealed

Today The Pokemon Company announced a slew of new details for Pokemon X and Pokemon Y, including the first official reveal of the evolved forms of starter Pokemon Chespin, Fennekin and Froakie.

Chespin will evolve into Quilladin, a Spiny Armor grass-type Pokemon that can learn the Ground-type move Mud Shot, which lowers’ opponents speed in addition to dealing damage. Fennekin will evolve into Braixen, a fire-type that can use the Psychic-type move Psyshock, which “deals damage based on the opponent’s defense.” Finally, Froakie will evolve into Frogadier, a Bubble Frog Pokemon that can learn the flying-type move Bounce, which “sends the user into the air on its first turn so it can attack on the second” and is super effective against grass-types.

In addition to showing off clothing, hat, shoe and accessory customization for trainers, The Pokemon Company also showed off Pokemon with different forms, such as Furfrou, a Poodle Pokemon that “can be groomed into a number of different appearances.” Several styles are available depending on how often Furfrou is groomed, and its fur will grow back if left alone for too long. A new Psychic-type Pokemon, Meowstic, can also take on different forms, learning different moves based on whether it’s male or female. Male Meowstic will learn Miracle Eye, which allows attacks to land even when opponents evade, and female Meowstic will learn Extrasensory, which “not only does damage but can also cause the target to flinch so it can’t use moves on that turn.” Male and female versions of Pyroar (the Pokemon revealed yesterday) were also shown off.

The Pokemon Company also explained that Mewtwo actually has multiple Mega Evolutions depending on whether he holds one of two Mega Stones -- Mewtwonite X or Mewtwonite Y. The Mega Mewtwo previously revealed was Mega Mewtwo Y (which gains a boost to Special Attack), but Mega Mewtwo X will instead gain a fighting-type in addition to its psychic powers. Another new Mega evolution, Mega Garchomp, was also revealed, with greatly increased Attack and Special Attack stats along with the Dragon Claw attack becoming “extra ferocious.”

More of Pokemon X and Y’s characters were also revealed, including the five scientists in Team Flare. Each is recognizable by their unique hair color -- Celosia has purple hair, Aliana has orange hair, Bryony has green hair, Mable has blue hair and Xerosic (the lone male) has red hair. Team Flare’s focus “is world-changing, and they have a clear goal in mind, but what is it?” The Pokemon Company also hinted at Diantha, “a famous movie star Trainers will meet during their journey. In addition to her acting career, Diantha is a Pokémon Trainer, though she seems to show more interest in other Trainers who have real potential.”
