PlayStation 4 Not Launching in Japan Until 2014

Today, Sony revealed that PlayStation 4 won’t be launching in its native Japan until 2014. This doesn’t exactly come as a shock – Sony has been noncommittal about the Japanese date since E3 – but it does finally confirm that the west will be getting PlayStation 4 first.

“The availability of content” is the driving reason behind this decision, according to Sony. The company wants to ensure that there are enough games for the Japanese market ready for PS4 before releasing it, and essentially stated that development for western-centric games is farther along.

PlayStation 4 will launch in Japan on February 22, 2014, and will cost 39,980 Yen ($401) on its own with a DualShock 4 controller, or for 43,980 Yen ($441) with the PlayStation 4’s camera. A special “First Limited Pack” will also be available, which will come with a download code for Knack and a one year guarantee on the hardware itself.
