Justice League of America #7.2: Killer Frost Review

killerfrostKiller Frost is probably not a villain everybody is clamoring to know more about. Fortunately, that doesn't stop Sterling Gates and Derlis Santacruz from fleshing her out in a pretty good Villains Month issue. We get a complete story here, from her origin to her reaction to the events of Forever Evil. The best bits are at the end, showing what us what happens to a villain who loses their hero and it's interesting stuff. In fact, it would have been nice if the issue had spent more time with that and less with her somewhat generic origin.

Gates and Santacruz do a neat trick here. They line up the beginning and the ending in a cool juxtaposition, the notion of dying in the cold, of dying all alone. The last page is especially great as we see Killer Frost completely broken at the loss of Firestorm. She needs him -- she's attached to him -- and a world without him crushes her. It's a great setup for the villains' eventual rebellion against the Crime Syndicate. Very cool stuff.

Visually, the issue is nice, too. Santacruz doesn't skimp on detail, rendering every page to the max. When we get to the costumed action towards the end, the book really soars. It looks dynamic and exciting, big and bold. The only problems occur at the beginning, were the story drags a bit. The characters tend to look staged and stiff, their expressions never quite selling their emotion. It's not bad, but it certainly doesn't live up to the back half of the comic. That half looks fantastic.
