iPhone 5S Touch ID Won’t Work With Severed Fingers

If you’re looking to steal an iPhone 5S this fall, don’t bother cutting off the owner’s finger. As reported by Mashable, the Touch ID fingerprint sensor in Apple’s new phone won’t work unless a live finger is used to access it.

“The [RF capacitive sensor] technology is built in a way that the [fingerprint] image has to be taken from a live finger,” says Sebastien Taveau, CTO of Validity Sensors. “No one in biometrics wants to talk about cut fingers and dead bodies, but at the end of the day we are still asked to remove the fears of consumer and make sure that they understand that [a severed finger] will not work.”

Taveau added that the technology Apple is using in Touch ID isn’t necessarily new, but “the big difference is that they made it cool. It’s been around on laptops, but besides locking and unlocking your laptop there was not much of a use case for it. Now with Apple, by actually building an experience, they are educating the market, which is very important.”

He also noted that he expects to see Android phones “shipping [these kinds of] devices in the next couple of months.”

Apple revealed iPhone 5S last week and opened pre-orders on Friday. For much more on the phone (including our experiences trying Touch ID ourselves), check out our hands-on impressions.
