Fall 2013 TV Preview

Make sure your DVR has plenty of room on it, because fall TV is here! In the next few weeks and months, we'll see the return of Eric Cartman, Rick Grimes and Korra and new series starring everyone from Robin Williams to Rebel Wilson - not to mention a certain Marvel Comics-based series from Joss Whedon.

On the following pages, you'll see many notable returning TV series plus a ton of new shows spotlighted, followed by a larger list of fall series on the final page.

Luther

Airs On: BBC America

Premiere: 9/3/13

Idris Elba returns for a third season of the acclaimed drama about a very smart but very damaged detective. This time out, Luther must deal with two conflicting crimes, while he encounters a woman (Resident Evil's Sienna Guillory) who could offer him happiness at last. This has been announced as the final season of the series, though there is talk of a movie.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Airs On: FXX

Premiere: 9/4/13

First off, no, that's not a typo above - It's Always Sunny is one of the shows moving from FX to FXX, the new comedy-centric sister channel launching this month. Season 9 of the series will find the gang tackling gun control, getting meta about their lack of awards show love and trying to make piece with their enemies on Thanksgiving. Plus, look for an episode written by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

The League

TheLeague

Airs On: FXX

Premiere: 9/4/13

Season 5 of the comedy series (now on FXX!) will involve Andre and Trixie planning what co-executive producer Jeff Schaffer calls, "the most labor intensive and guest-unfriendly wedding of all time." Later in the season, Andre will attempt to get words of wisdom from Snoop Dogg/Lion and instead come away with intel on Snoop's son's youth football league. And yes, Seth Rogen's Dirty Randy will return once more this year.

Boardwalk Empire

Airs On: HBO

Premiere: 9/8/13

With the threat of Gyp done, Season 4 finds Nucky now living away from the boardwalk and trying to keep a lower profile. Look for a larger role for Chalky this season, now that Nucky has made good on his promise to open a new jazz club for him. Newcomers to the series this year include Patricia Arquette, Ron Livingston and Jeffrey Wright.

Sons of Anarchy

Sonsofanarchy

Airs On: FX

Premiere: 9/10/13

Season 6 will begin to set up the end of the series next year, as SAMCRO finds itself tied to a decidedly dark turn of events (yes, even for this show). Gemma in the meantime will be serving as more of an advisor to Jax than ever, while Tara and Clay both try to survive their respective prison sentences.

The Legend of Korra

Airs On: Nickelodeon

Premiere: 9/13/13

Fans can rejoice as Book Two at last begins! The subtitle, "Spirits," hints at the exploration of the spirit world Korra will find herself on, with a story that picks up six months after Book One. We'll meet Wan, the very first Avatar, voiced by The Walking Dead's Steven Yeun, with other new characters played by Lisa Edelstein (House), John Michael Higgins (Best in Show), Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation) and James Remar (Dexter).

Sleepy Hollow

Airs On: FOX

Premiere: 9/16/13

Uber-producers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Transformers, Fringe, Star Trek) are behind this very different take on the classic Washington Irving story. Not only does it change Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman's origins to the American Revolution but the story finds the two returning in the modern era, where Crane (Tom Mison) teams with a police officer (Nicole Beharie).

Dads

Airs On: FOX

Premiere: 9/17/13

Seth MacFarlane and his Ted collaborators Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild are behind this multicam sitcom about two friends and gaming industry business partners (Seth Green and Giovanni Ribisi) whose fathers (Martin Mull and Peter Riegert) move back in with them. The show is beginning with its fair share of controversy and criticism, with some taking offense to its notable use of racially-charged humor.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Airs On: FOX

Premiere: 9/17/13

Parks and Rec co-creator Michael Schur and fellow P&R alum Dan Goor take a comedic look at life at a New York police precinct in this new series starring the amusing pairing of noted goofball Andy Samberg and the notably dramatic Andre Braugher. The idea is to do a slice of life comedy, not a parody like Police Squad, with Samberg describing his character -- a good cop, despite his antics -- as "McNulty from The Wire, but instead of drinking and philandering, he’s doing gags in the office.”

New Girl

NewGirl

Airs On: FOX

Premiere: 9/17/13

Who's that guy? It's Damon Wayans Jr.! Yes, New Girl: Season 3 will see the return of Coach, Nick and Schmidt's roommate in the pilot episode, who had to be written out due to Wayans' commitment to Happy Endings. With Happy Endings over, Wayans is back, as Coach will be appearing in a multi-episode arc this season. Meanwhile, Jess and Nick will try to make things work in their new status as roommates with plenty of benefits...

How I Met's final season, The Machine's new night and Coulson's resurrection on Page 2...
