Capcom Games Sell Well But Miss Targets

Capcom has released its fiscal 2013 report, in which it reveals the sales figures of recent releases.

In total, 14 million of the publisher's games were sold at retail though only three titles managed to break the 1 million sales mark.

Of these, two failed to meet Capcom's expectations in terms of sales figures: Resident Evil 6 sold 4.9 million copies when the company had projected sales of 7 million, while DmC: Devil May Cry sold 1.15 million units against a target of 2 million.

It wasn't all bad news though: the publisher announced that new franchise Dragon's Dogma "achieved an extraordinary 1.3 million units sold, successfully establishing this as a standalone brand."

Elsewhere in the report, it was announced that despite revenue climbing from ¥82 billion ($820m) to ¥94 billion ($940m), Capcom's continuing efforts to modernise the company and reduce outsourcing saw profits fall to $31 million. Other than in 2010 when the publisher made a profit of $22 million, this is its least profitable year since 2005.

Capcom is optimistic that profits will double in the next 12 months however, though this won't be thanks to boxed retail releases. It's projecting total retail sales of 13 million units, with Monster Hunter 4 expected to shift 2.8 million units and both Resident Evil: Revelations and Lost Planet 3 targeting sales of 1.2 million copies.
