Dota 2 Tops League of Legends, According to Raptr

Dota 2 had more total players and total playtime than League of Legends during August, according to newly released data tracked by Raptr.

Although neither title was the most-played during the month -- that distinction goes to the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops II -- Dota 2 did come in as the number two game, ahead of League of Legends, Rift, and World of Warcraft. It's not the first stretch of time Dota 2 has ever surpassed League of Legends during, according to Raptr, but with Dota 2 having been officially released in July, making it freely available through Steam to anyone who wants it, this may represent a shift in the free-to-play MOBA genre. On the other hand, the Dota 2 International tournament could have temporarily skewed the results in Valve's favor.

This information has to be taken with a grain of salt, however, as Raptr's data is only representative of its users which, while totaling 18 million people, does not include everyone. Perhaps more importantly, Raptr is a service that caters primarily to North America, meaning it fails to properly account for the massive gaming audience in Asia and its preferences.

Dota 2 just today received the First Blood update which, among other things, introduces Portal-themed content including the GLaDOS announcer.

GTA V Disappearing Vehicles Being Investigated by Rockstar

Rockstar is aware of issues Grand Theft Auto V players have encountered with customized cars disappearing from their garages and is investigating the issue, according to a support page on its website.

Some players who have customized a vehicle and stored it in a garage have found that vehicle is missing after completing a mission. Rockstar has not yet developed a fix for the problem, but in an update on the issue's support page, Rockstar did offer up some information that can help players to avoid running into any problems with disappearing cars.

The update notes the "issue may occur if you drive another character's personal vehicle." Players are free to switch between three different characters, each of which has a vehicle that belongs to him, but is not restricted to him. In addition to avoiding driving those as anyone but the owner, players are encouraged to be wary of garages for the time being. "In the meantime, please try to avoid parking a car in a garage, driving one already in a garage, or getting in a default vehicle, when playing as a character other than the one with your upgrades," the support article states.

Rockstar has provided no indication of when a formal fix will be released, only stating it is "looking into a fix to prevent this from occurring in the future." The developer is also currently investigating crashes in the Xbox 360 version of the game.

Grand Theft Auto V was released last week to great critical acclaim and exceedingly strong sales.

Former Dexter Showrunner on How He Would Have Ended the Series

Warning, if you haven't seen the Dexter series finale, do not read any further - spoilers do follow...

Not that Dexter has come to a close after eight seasons, the postmortem on how it perhaps should have, or could have concluded have gone full throttle - as have the continuing spinoff speculations.

Clyde Phillips, who was an executive producer and showrunner on Dexter in the early years and exited at the close of the Trinity Killer season, recently weighed-in on how he would have said good-bye to Dexter, had he still been a part of the series.

Phillips told E!'s Kristin Dos Santos the following in a recent interview.

I haven't shared this with anyone, And I can tell you that this is what I personally would have done should I have stayed with the show. I chose not to stay with the show, and so everybody did what they did, and I had no problem with that…and I think they did a good job with the final episode. But here is what I personally would have pitched:

In the very last scene of the series, Dexter wakes up. And everybody is going to think, 'Oh, it was a dream.' And then the camera pulls back and back and back and then we realize, 'No, it's not a dream.' Dexter's opening his eyes and he's on the execution table at the Florida Penitentiary. They're just starting to administer the drugs and he looks out through the window to the observation gallery.

And in the gallery are all the people that Dexter killed—including the Trinity Killer and the Ice Truck Killer (his brother Rudy), LaGuerta who he was responsible killing, Doakes who he's arguably responsible for, Rita, who he's arguably responsible for, Lila. All the big deaths, and also whoever the weekly episodic kills were. They are all there.

That's what I envisioned for the ending of Dexter. That everything we've seen over the past eight seasons has happened in the several seconds from the time they start Dexter's execution to the time they finish the execution and he dies.  Literally, his life flashed before his eyes as he was about to die. I think it would have been a great, epic, very satisfying conclusion.

The producer doesn't mention how he would have arrived at that point, but he does reveal that he was inspired by Ambrose Pierce's 1890 short story An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, which features a twist ending.

There's no way to say how Dexter would have gone if Phillips, who is now an executive producer on Showtime's Nurse Betty, would have stayed on board. Now all that's left to do is look ahead, as Dexter producers and Showtime executives continue to send some very mixed messages about the oft-discussed, possible, spinoff series.

In a post-finale chat with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Scott Buck said, once again, that, "there have been no discussions yet on what a spinoff might be. Whether there is some other version coming out of the show in the future, it's always a possibility but there have been no talks about it at this point. We're just now finishing up Dexter."

Yet when asked specifically if they'd discussed the Hannah/Harrison storyline as a possible launch for a spinoff series, Buck replied,"Absolutely. I love Yvonne Strahovski, she's a terrific actor and has brought so much to the series. Who knows? We may see her again in the future."

Showtime president of entertainment David Nevins has repeatedly said that Dexter is to Showtime what Batman is to Warner Bros.. In other words, they want to stay in the Dexter business and "keep the show alive." The network is being relatively slow to pull the trigger on a specific spinoff, though. Perhaps they are awaiting the response to the finale to see which direction they'd like to go.

Did you enjoy the Dexter finale? Do you like Phillips' concept for a series closer? If there is a spinoff, what would you like it to be?

Freddie Prinze Jr., David Oyelowo in Talks for Star Wars Rebels

We've heard our fair share of Star Wars: Episode VII casting news over the last couple months, but what about Disney/Lucasfilm's planned animated series Star Wars Rebels?

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Freddie Prinze Jr. (Scooby Doo, Mass Effect 3), David Oyelowo (The Butler, Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Steve Blum (The Legend of Korra, Cowboy Bebop), Vanessa Marshall (The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy) and Taylor Gray (Bucket and Skinner's Epic Adventures) are currently in talks to join the show's voice cast.

Little is yet known about Star Wars Rebels, including who the main characters are, other than it takes place between the two current Star Wars trilogies, set after the events of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and before the original Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past and a writer on one of the upcoming standalone Star Wars movies), Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and Greg Weisman (The Spectacular Spider-Man, Young Justice) are executive producing the project.

Star Wars Rebels is targeting a fall 2014 debut on Disney XD.

Real-Life Ninja Turtles Lair Would Empty Your Wallet

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' underground lair may very well stink of garbage and human waste, but it's otherwise pretty bodacious: TV room, arcade, training dojo -- not to mention all the pizza you could ever want. But how much would radical digs like that cost?

Well, our friends at Movoto Real Estate crunched some numbers, basing their estimates on a rough floor plan inspired by the original cartoon series. Here's what they found:

iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S Sales Top 9 Million in 3 Days

In spite of rumors of limited pre-order interest and low supplies, Apple is reporting that iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S sales hit 9 million units over the span of the three days — a new record for the company. Both models went on sale this past Friday, September 20th, in the U.S., Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, and the UK. While the company has not broken down the figure by model, it has acknowledged that demand for the iPhone 5S has exceeded supply with online orders shipments now set at several weeks out.

Installations for Apple's latest mobile operating system, iOS 7, have been similarly massive, with over 200 million devices reportedly now running the OS. Did you pick up the new iPhone 5C or iPhone 5S? If not, did you install iOS 7 on your existing device? Sound off in the comments below.

TGS: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 Is Most Impressive

MercurySteam’s maiden Castlevania game, Lords of Shadow, is the best 3D Castlevania ever made. Not only is its gameplay solid, but it truly understands what Castlevania is all about, if not in how it plays, then in how it looks and feels. Indeed, Lords of Shadow, in many ways, feels like a modern-day Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, an adventure that was about far more than just treking through Dracula’s fortress. It felt meatier and more substantial – though not as traditional – than many entries in the franchise.

The brief portion of Lords of Shadow 2 that I played doesn’t indicate, one way or the other, if that substance – from long play time to occasional backtracking – will make its way from the original to the sequel (although it all purportedly takes place in an open world). But in terms of sheer gameplay, MercurySteam’s upcoming continuation of the Castlevania series is quite promising.

If Lords of Shadow was a modern-day Simon’s Quest (right down to some of its references, like Veros Woods), then Lords of Shadow 2 might be its Symphony of the Night, at least when it comes to sheer fan service. There were no fewer than three direct odes to arguably the best Castlevania game ever created packed into the 15 minute demo, including an iconic toss of Dracula's chalice and two verbatim quotes shared between Richter Belmont and Dracula at the very beginning of Symphony of the Night. This nod to old-school fans is a nice touch.

Like the original Lords of Shadow, its sequel takes a great deal from Sony Santa Monica’s God of War series when it comes to combat, and like those games, clobbering enemies is quite enjoyable. While I couldn’t read the on-screen text (as it was in Japanese), nor could I invert my controls (as I couldn’t read the menus), I quickly got a grasp for the game’s interplay between button mash-type moves and switching between a couple of Gabriel’s special attacks, the Void Sword and the Chaos Claws.

Using the Xbox 360 controller’s bumpers allowed Gabriel to put away his whip and opt for weapons that could quickly shift the tide of battle. This early portion of Lords of Shadow 2’s demo felt a little bit run-of-the-mill – indeed, the God of War-like arena battle was complete with multiple waves jumping in one after the other following a quick camera pan – but it’s no doubt placed at the beginning of the demo to give players a feel for how the game is played.

Now you're the bad guy.

Now you're the bad guy.

Of course, calling the main character Gabriel is a bit deceptive. Gabriel is now very much Dracula, and it shows. As such, to heal himself, he can grasp onto wounded enemies and suck their blood dry. It’s a tad bit difficult to get the timing of this simple move down at first, mostly because doing so often requires you to break a combo, but it adds to the feeling that Gabriel is very much undead.

The midway portion of the demo gave me a look at some of Lords of Shadow 2’s almost Uncharted-like climbing section, complete with bricks that predictably break and nearly plummet Dracula to his death. This part of the demo felt overly-scripted and exceptionally anti-climactic (if not a bit silly), but when the game’s climbing and combat mechanics eventually combined, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 truly began to floor me.

A war wages outside of Dracula’s castle, and a mysterious character, plated in ornate gold armor, confronts our vampiric protagonist as he emerges from his fortress. Exchanging the aforementioned Symphony of the Night quotes with one another, the two thereafter get mixed-up in a brutal fight. The fray appears, at first, to be fairly typical for a hack-and-slash game such as this. But when a massive golem-like creature appears to mix things up, the situation gets turned on its head in a wonderfully Shadow of the Colossus-like sequence.

The original Lords of Shadow had huge monsters in it – including a memorable fight with a giant creature on an ice lake – but there was nothing quite like this. While fending off continuous projectile attacks from his armored foe, Dracula must climb up the enormous, constantly-moving enemy. Basic quick-time events force you to stay focused on hanging on for dear life, while the occasional wave of soldiers gives you a reason to break out Dracula’s repertoire of weapons.

This section didn’t only feel epic, but it had a hectic and almost dangerous feel to it. It felt a bit quick-timey, too – though the quick-time events don’t pose much of a challenge once you get the hang of their timing -- and it was especially frustrating when the game felt it was necessary to zoom in on certain things over and over again to throw in your face exactly what you were supposed to do. But it was nonetheless an undeniably fun romp, especially when all of the introduced elements were finally combined and unleashed.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 launches for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in February of 2014.

Valve Reveals Linux-Based SteamOS

As teased last week, Valve has revealed SteamOS, the operating system that will power its upcoming living room initiative.

According to Valve's site, "SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen. It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines."

"We’ve come to the conclusion that the environment best suited to delivering value to customers is an operating system built around Steam itself," the site continues.

SteamOS will tie in with Steam, and "you don’t have to give up your favorite games, your online friends, and all the Steam features you love just to play on the big screen. SteamOS, running on any living room machine, will provide access to the best games and user-generated content available."

steamos_livingroom

Valve says Steam OS has "achieved significant performance increases in graphics processing, and we’re now targeting audio performance and reductions in input latency at the operating system level. Game developers are already taking advantage of these gains as they target SteamOS for their new releases."

"Steam is not a one-way content broadcast channel, it’s a collaborative many-to-many entertainment platform, in which each participant is a multiplier of the experience for everyone else," Valve writes. "With SteamOS, “openness” means that the hardware industry can iterate in the living room at a much faster pace than they’ve been able to. Content creators can connect directly to their customers. Users can alter or replace any part of the software or hardware they want. Gamers are empowered to join in the creation of the games they love. SteamOS will continue to evolve, but will remain an environment designed to foster these kinds of innovation."

Valve notes four new features that will be integrated into SteamOS:

  • In-Home Streaming: A machine running SteamOS will be able to stream games running on your existing computer to your TV
  • Family Sharing: As Valve previously teased, multiple people will be able to take turns playing games within a single Steam account while earning their own achievements and saving their own progress to the cloud
  • Media Services: Valve says it's working with "many of the media services you know and love," to allow "access your favorite music and video with Steam and SteamOS."
  • Family Options: Families will "have more control over what titles get seen by whom," likely implying some sort of parental control system.

According to Valve, "hundreds of great games are already running natively on SteamOS," and announcements "in the coming weeks" will show off "all the AAA titles coming natively to SteamOS in 2014." The full Steam catalog will be accessible for in-home streaming, as well as access to the Steam Cloud, Steam Workshop and all of the Friends features in Steam. SteamOS will also be "constantly evolving" and will "continue to deliver not only valuable game updates directly from content makers, but also regular additions and new features to the OS itself."

Valve says SteamOS "will be available soon as a free download for users and as a freely licensable operating system for manufacturers" and is teasing two more announcements this week, with the second to follow on Wednesday, September 25th at 10:00 a.m. Pacific.

Microsoft Unveils Surface 2 Windows RT Tablet

In addition to the Surface Pro 2, today Microsoft officially unveiled the Surface 2, the successor to last year's Surface RT tablet. The new Windows RT tablet is equipped with a full HD display, up from the original Surface RT's 1366 x 768 screen, and will be now offered in white.

surface 2 2

Powered by Nvidia's Tegra 4 processor, Microsoft claims the Surface 2 is three to four times faster than the original, while still providing a 25 percent increase to battery life. The Surface 2 is also lighter and thinner than its predecessor. As expected, the new device will ship with Windows 8.1 RT, and Microsoft will include the full Office Suite.

The Microsoft Surface 2 will be available in 32GB and 64GB configurations, with pricing starting at $449. Pre-orders for the Surface 2 will start on September 24th through Microsoft's online and physical stores, and Best Buy in the United States and Canada.

Microsoft Surface Pro 2 Tablet Officially Announced

Today Microsoft officially unveiled its 2nd generation Windows 8 tablets, including the new Surface Pro 2. As expected, the successor to last year's Surface Pro is a 10.1-inch tablet running a full version of the Windows desktop operating system, and features a number of hardware upgrades.

Consistent with previous reports, the Surface Pro 2 utilizes a new Intel Haswell processor. Microsoft claims that the Pro 2 is 20 percent faster than the original that there is a 50 percent increase to graphics performance.

surface pro 2

Microsoft also equipped the new Surface Pro tablet with an improved battery, with the company stating that battery life has been improved by 75 percent — we found battery life to be a major problem with the original Windows 8 tablet, so it'll be interesting to see if the Pro 2 can live up to the claims.

Like the first Surface Pro, the new model also features a digitizer pen. A dual-stage kickstand has also been introduced, which should please those who experienced issues with the limited-use kickstand that came with the original Pro.

Aesthetically, the Surface Pro 2 very closely resembles its predecessor, which isn't necessaily a bad thing. Microsoft has retained what appears to be the same magnesium alloy, VaporMg casing and dark finish that came with the previous Surface tablets, as well as optional covers that double as keyboards. This time around, though, the company will offer more than just the Type Cover and Touch Cover.

A fabric-wrapped Power Cover was unveiled, which is said to extend battery life of the Surface Pro 2 by two and a half times. A Surface Docking Station was also introduced, which adds a number of additional ports, making the tablet more like a full-fledged laptop. The Docking Station is equipped with four USB ports, a Mini DisplayPort, Ethernet, audio in and out, and a power port. The new Type Cover, aptly named the Type Cover 2, will be offered in a number of different colors, is thinner than the previous model — almost as thin as the original Touch Cover — and is now backlit.

Microsoft's Surface Pro 2 will start at $899 and will be offered in 64GB and 128GB configurations with 4GB of RAM. 256GB and 512GB versions with 8GB of RAM will also be sold. Pre-orders for the Surface Pro 2 will start on September 24th through Microsoft's online and physical stores, and Best Buy in the United States and Canada.

Grand Theft Auto V UK Sales Figures Revealed

Grand Theft Auto V is the UK's fastest-selling game of all time, having sold just over 2.25 million copies in five days.

Chart-Track has revealed that Rockstar's latest adventure snatched the crown from Call of Duty: Black Ops by 250,000 units, after the popular shooter sold 2 million copies over the same period back in 2010.

It's hard to imagine a week where one title has been so dominant or perhaps ever will.

1.57 million of these sales took place in the first 24 hours, generating £65 million and breaking day one records. This means GTA V's launch week was 2.4 times bigger than GTA IV's; in fact, it's been bigger than all the other GTA launch weeks combined.

As you can probably guess, this means Grand Theft Auto V has stormed to the top of the UK chart this week. What's crazy though is the fact that the other nine titles rounding out the Top 10 account for just four per cent of games sales last week, with Chart-Track saying it's "hard to imagine a week where one title has been so dominant or perhaps ever will."

All this combines to mean that, less than a week after its launch, GTA V already holds the enviable title of being the 24th biggest-selling game ever in the UK, with 57 per cent of sales being made on Xbox 360 and 43 per cent being made on PlayStation 3.

It was revealed last week that Grand Theft Auto V managed to make $800 million globally after its first day on sale, going on to pass the $1 billion mark within three days.

PlayStation Games Could Stream to PCs, TVs and Phones

PlayStation games could one day stream directly to PCs, Smart TVs and smartphones in a series of developments that would see the PlayStation brand repositioned as a service rather than a series of consoles.

In an interview with Dengeki Online (via Dualshockers), SCE Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida explained that the rollout of Gaikai's cloud services on PlayStation 4 next year is just the beginning of what the company hopes to achieve.

"Speaking of the ultimate goal, we would like to deliver PlayStation games to all devices," he said. "So we’re considering various things like PC, TVs, Blu-ray players, smartphones and tablets. We hope to continue to expand not only to Sony devices, but even to devices other than Sony’s. This is still being studied.

Speaking of the ultimate goal, we would like to deliver PlayStation games to all devices.

"We previously spoke about PlayStation going from hardware to something closer to a service, regardless of the device — Of course PlayStation will still be the center, but I think we would like to expand to different things."

When the service is launched in North America early next year, Gaikai will be used to allow PlayStation 4 owners to enjoy PlayStation 3 games on their console, despite the upcoming device not natively offering backwards compatibility. While it's exciting to hear that the company is keen to offer its titles to as many people as possible down the road, it's still reassuring to hear that the console business will remain its focus for the foreseeable future.

The PlayStation 4 will be available in North America on November 15 and in Europe on November 29.

Grand Theft Auto V Reportedly Crashing Old Xbox 360s

Owners of Xbox 360 consoles manufactured between 2006 and 2008 are claiming that Grand Theft Auto V is causing the console to crash.

Kotaku reports that a number of gamers who own an Xbox 360 manufactured or refurbished between 2006 and 2008 have experienced issues with freezing and, ultimately, crashing consoles.

Problems apparently start following cutscenes after the first mission, though it's not clear what's causing them. Some people have suggested a small hard drive could be the culprit, but users who have fitted a larger hard drive are apparently being hit by it as well.

A number of possible solutions are being thrown about, though it doesn't seem that any have been proven to work. One that's meant to have a fairly high success rate sees you delete all game data, clear your system cache three times then delete marketplace data from storage system items before unplugging your console for three minutes. After this, you should install disc 1 and power off without inserting disc 2, then restart the console and install the second disc. That's advice from Xbox Live support though, and doesn't seem to consider Rockstar's guidelines about not installing both discs.

We've reached out to Rockstar to see if it will confirm the existence of the issue, and whether or not a solution is being sought. As soon as we hear back, we'll update this story.

Final Fantasy XIV's First Patch and Player Numbers Revealed

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn's first patch will add player housing, new dungeons, a PvP arena and more according to the game's director.

During a panel at TGS (via Siliconera), Naoki Yoshida revealed a heap of new features that'll be coming to the MMO before too long.

Several new dungeons will be added to the game, including one called the Crystal Tower. Drawing inspiration from the same area in Final Fantasy III, it'll require 24 players with strong skills and coordination to make it out alive. Player housing will also be available in all three city-states, with over 380 decorative items available to help personalise your home. A PvP arena called The Wolves' Den will also pit two teams of four against each other.

Other additions to the game in the patch include a new Primal battle against Good King Moogle Mog, hard modes for two dungeons, extreme difficulty fights against each of the Primals, daily quests quests, random matching rewards, a beauty parlour that'll let you change your hairstyle and a treasure hunting system.

Additionally, Yoshida revealed for the first time just how many players have logged into Eorzea since it relaunched on August 28. Square Enix has seen 1,080,000 unique logins, with an average of 617,000 unique daily logins taking place and peak concurrency reaching 344,000 users. Considering all the issues that plagued the game's launch and its chequered history, it's an undeniably promising start.

Seeing as anyone who buys the game on PlayStation 3 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 4 version for free and digital sales only resumed last week, this number is likely to grow in the near future.

IGN AU Pubcast 79: Viva Los Santos!

Remember that shortlived late-'90s sitcom with the strangely specific title that comprehensively detailed both the quantity and gender of its leading trio of characters? Two Guys, A Girl and a Pizza Place? That's this fortnight's Pubcast in a nutshell. Suffering from a devastating case of the everybody-else-is-overseasies, the Pubcast squad has been pruned down to Jem, Baker, and Luke (who are all aware that, as a result, they need to be twice as funny).

TwoGuysGirl

So, a little more Nathan Fillion and a little less... wait, who IS that guy in the middle?

In related news, there appear to have been a more guys and girls in that deceptively-titled sitcom than we thought, rendering everything you just read moot. So, er, on with the Pubcast!

Episode 79!

  • Grand Theft Auto V! Baker hasn't finished it yet, even with all the Taiwanese Red Bull. We still talk about it for approximately forever.
  • Speaking of Baker, Baker speculates on what Sandra Bullock may call her breasts.
  • Speaking of breasts, Jem recounts her first GTA V lap dance and wonders aloud why she chose the blonde, tattooed stripper that most resembled her.
  • Speaking of GTA V, how good is GTA V? Seriously, it's like The Sims, only more realistic.
  • The official Xbox One release date for Japan is a shrug. There, we decided it.
  • Why the Finnish should be allowed to name all new games for the immediate future.
  • Why Jem never owned an original Xbox but would do a kegstand if required.
  • At least two Bryan Brown movies that need to be made into games.
  • Plus your questions answered in the usual Facebook Mailbag!

Download it today! Episode 79!

And don't forget you can check out (almost) all the previous episodes on iTunes. And hey, why not subscribe while you're there? Also! Come join the IGN Australia Facebook community and follow us on Twitter.

Watch Christian Bale's Batman Audition

One of the goodies on the forthcoming Blu-ray release of The Dark Knight Trilogy: Ultimate Collector's Edition is Christian Bale's screen test for the lead role in Batman Begins.

The audition, which can be seen below, is notable for a few things. First, Bale is already using his divisive Bat-Voice (albeit a toned down version of it) and is wearing Val Kilmer's Batsuit from Batman Forever. And reading opposite him in the role of Rachel Dawes is none other than Amy Adams, who would star opposite Bale in two future films (The Fighter and the upcoming American Hustle), and would also eventually play Lois Lane in Man of Steel.

The featurettes also confirm old rumors that director Christopher Nolan initially offered Gary Oldman the role of Ra's Al Ghul, but he turned it down. As you know, Oldman would end up playing Commissioner Gordon with Liam Neeson cast as Ra's instead.

Colin Farrell and Paula Patton Offered Lead Roles in Warcraft Movie

Legendary Pictures and Atlas Entertainment have reportedly made offers to Colin Farrell and Paula Patton (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, 2 Guns) to star in their Duncan Jones-directed adaptation of the Blizzard video game Warcraft.

Deadline claims they're "not sure that Farrell is going to make a deal–sources said it’s 50/50 – and Jones is testing other actors for the major roles." Patton is said to be in negotiations for an unspecified leading role.

Although Warcraft is currently without a studio, it's expected to land at Universal Pictures, which recently sealed a deal with Legendary to become their new home after Legendary parted ways with Warner Bros.

Warcraft begins filming in January.

One of the nicest surprises at this past summer's San Diego Comic-Con was Legendary's conceptual sizzle reel for Warcraft. The footage had a sci-fi western feel, sort of like a fantasy version of the silent, tense opening of Once Upon a Time in the West. Click here for the full breakdown of what we saw.

TGS: Yakuza Ishin is GTA Meets 19th-Century Japan

The Yakuza games are the closest thing Japan has to GTA. They're crime epics set in huge, fastidiously detailed cities, defined by their lengthily-elucidated TV-style plots and impressive selection of random, optional things to do in their worlds, from karaoke to UFO catchers, restaurants, golf and incredibly creepy hostess minigames. They're more rigid than GTA in both structure and style, and the brawling combat is a long way from the Rockstar's trademark driving and shooting, but Yakuza's Japanese cities are the closest thing to Rockstar's American ones in size, detail, and perceptiveness. Both, too, hold up a mirror - however warped - to their settings' culture.

It's heartbreaking that Yakuza 5, the series' current-generation epitome, seems to have no chance of being translated into English and released abroad. It features 5 Japanese cities - Nagoya, Osaka, Fukuoka, Tokyo and Sapporo - and 120 (!) different optional minigames, which makes even GTA 5 look a little less gigantic. The next in the series, Yakuza Ishin, is a spin-off set in late Edo period Japan, right at the time of the Meiji Restoration. It's a fascinating time in the country's history, and instead of the skeezy streets and neon lights of Kamurocho in Tokyo it transports us to late-1800s market towns, riverside farms and nascent cities and pagoda-style castles. If Yakuza 5 has little chance of ever seeing a Western release, Ishin surely has even poorer prospects, but anyone with an interest in this series will be tempted by an import.

This isn’t the first historical Yakuza spin-off – in 2008, Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan, the third game in the series, took us back to 1605 in Kyoto, Japan's then-capital. Seeing Kazuma Kiryu, Goro Maijima and other Yakuza iconic characters reimagined in samurai-style regalia as historical figured is a kick – Yakuza’s plots have always been entertainingly overblown and punctuated by melodramatic face-offs, and that seems to make a lot more sense when everyone is carrying swords. Kiryu Kazuma is now Ryoma Sakamoto, one of the key figures in the overthrowing of the Shogunate. Late 19th-Century Japan means late late 19th-Century weapons – swords and antiquated handguns join the wince-worthily violent hand-to-hand brawling that is the series’ signature. The TGS presentation shows Kazuma forging these, imbuing them with improbable powers like electrically charged strikes, and complex ability unlock trees like that spiral around a central node.

1800s Kazuma Kiryu is, if anything, even more talented at delivering stylish beatdowns, cutting through crowds with his sword. Finishing moves show him slicing through an enemy before sheathing the sword whilst he drops to the ground behind him, or shattering bullets in the air with the edge of the blade. Late Edo-period Tokyo doesn’t have kerbs, but there’s also a setting-appropriate version of the infamous kerb-stomp. There seems to be a great deal more finishing moves, incorporating all three weapons, and a card-based ability system that looks a bit like Samurai Top Trumps, though I couldn't begin to understand how that worked from a brief glimpse.

Outside of the fighting, Ishin looks like it will live up to series’ reputation for impressive extracurricular variety. For obvious reasons the usual arcade games and sporting activities are gone, but the TGS presentation showed minigames involving fishing, cooking, a kind of skeet-shooting game involving Kazuma slicing cannonballs out of the air with a sword, chicken-racing, serving customers beer and ramen at an izakaya, karaoke and fan-dancing odonburi (and creepy hostess minigames, by the looks of it, but the hostesses have been replaced by geisha) – even, by the looks of it, sumo wrestling, though Kazuma’s hardly the right build for that. There's also a homestead where Ryoma and Haruka, his young ward, live and work. Here the game temporarily becomes Harvest Moon, as Ryoma spends his time growing, harvesting and cooking crops, tending to animals and playing pleasant games of Mah-Jong with Haru.

As ever, it’s the world that looks most impressive, and this is the kind of world that games rarely depict or explore in such a way. Japanese history as depicted by video games is basically an endless sequence of battlefields, ninjas running along palace roofs, and falling cherry-blossoms. Yakuza Ishin’s 19th-Century Japan has towns and farms, restaurants and theatres, hundreds of inhabitants going about their business, as well as all the palaces and temples. The modern-day Yakuzas might have improbable plots but their depictions of modern Japan are stunningly faithful, at least aesthetically. I am greatly intrigued by the possibility of exploring a 19th-Century Japan depicted with the same attention to detail.

Plot-wise, I couldn’t figure much out. There was a dramatic assassination, lots of shouting, supernatural temple guards, ninja-like killers. The opening cutscene showed Kiryu and his posse running silently through a rainy night, red lanterns swaying in the wind, and into a castle where they sliced up all the guards before making it through the top, showing off greatly improved next-generation graphics. Yakuza has always been one of the best-looking games on the PS3, especially in the quality of its digital acting, and the PS4 footage was a noticeable step up.

Yakuza Ishin isn't far off - it's coming out on the 22nd February in Japan on both PS3 and PS4. Given how unlikely it is that Ishin will ever see an official Western release, though, it’s probably wise to start saving for an import - otherwise you might be waiting a long, long time.

After eight years Keza MacDonald is still not bored of writing about video games, which is just as well, as her skills at demon-slaying and pretend guitar are pretty much non-transferable. You can follow her on IGN and Twitter.

The Blacklist Star Megan Boone on Facing Off with James Spader

The Blacklist marks James Spader’s return to TV, pairing him up with Megan Boone, whose credits include My Bloody Valentine 3D and Blue Bloods, along with a starring role on Law & Order: LA. Spader plays Raymond “Red” Reddington, one of the FBI’s most wanted criminals, who mysteriously decides to turn himself in one day. Reddington offers his cooperation to the FBI, revealing “the blacklist”, which contains information on all sorts of other criminals he can help them bring in. His one big condition? He’ll only work alongside young FBI agent Elizabeth Keen (Boone). Elizabeth has no knowledge of any connection between her and Reddington, making his request all the more perplexing.

I sat down with Boone to talk about her high profile role on The Blacklist, acting alongside Spader and the go-to theory on why Reddington cares about Elizabeth so much. Plus, I ask Boone about what it was like to work with with Jean-Claude Van Damme in the upcoming movie Welcome to the Jungle.

IGN: Even if Red didn’t walk into her life, this show would still be picking up with Elizabeth on the craziest day ever for her, just in terms of life changes.

Boone: Exactly. Her whole life gets turned on it ear, and she is really put to task and put to the test. I think she comes out on top, but with a lot of questions about what’s true and what’s not.

Megan Boone in The Blacklist.

Megan Boone in The Blacklist.

IGN: Which is a natural thing. How do you think she is rolling with the punches? This was her first day on the job, she and her husband are looking into adopting a baby, and then she has all of this thrust at her. What do you think is going through her head?

Boone: I think she’s just on her toes and being thrown for such a loop that she doesn’t really have time to think. I think she’s just responding. How she responds is what tells you the most about her character and the most about who she is. Like any human being, when you go through the worst of times, that’s when you learn who you are and what you’re made of.

IGN: There's an interesting scene in the pilot where she’s asked to profile herself. Do you think that’s stuff that she’s thought about before, or is she kind of put in the moment there, where she has to go, “Okay, let me think about this”?

Boone: I think that she’s put right on the spot. I think that she is coming up with those answers about who she is right as she’s saying them. I think it’s a challenge, from a new employer who she might find intimidating, to be honest and open with them. You know, “Tell us the truth, be like an open book. We’ll trust you and work with you, but we need you right now, because we need to have Red open up to us, and he’ll only speak to you.”

IGN: What she says, some of it’s pretty harsh as far as the fact that she thinks people see her as a bitch. Do you think that is going to make her reevaluate things moving forward?

Boone: Well, as you can see from the pilot, she doesn’t actually do anything that’s bitchy to anyone around her during this really, really difficult time. I think that it goes to show how much she respects the people that are in her presence. She’s with the best of the best FBI agents, she’s very comfortable with her husband and respects him a lot, and they have a lovely relationship. So it says less about her character that she’s not a bitch and more about how she feels about the other characters around her and how important it is to her to make a good impression. I think she comes from a place where people thought she was a bitch, and maybe she learned from that experience and is trying to be a better person.

IGN: To even decide in the first place to be an FBI agent is obviously a huge decision. What do you think it is about her that made her pursue this line of work?

Boone: I think she’s scared of the criminal inside her and around her, and I think she’s a brave person who faces her fears. I think that she’s had exposure to criminal behavior her entire life. So she just wanted to learn as much as she could about it so that she could be as equipped as possible to manage this fear. It’s her greatest fear. That’s what’s cool about the fact that she’s being forced to come face-to-face, toe-to-toe, with the greatest criminal on the face of the Earth.

IGN: Speaking of that, what’s it like for you to go toe-to-toe with Mr. Spader?

Boone: Toe-to-toe with James Spader! First of all, it’s a privilege and an honor, and I feel really grateful that I was given the opportunity to work with such an incredible actor. He’s amazing in his ability to toe a line of being kind and accommodating as a coworker, and being that enigma and that mysterious person that James Spader, to people, can be. He plays these very off-kilter kind of roles, especially in his series work. All of his characters have been a little bit unique. Reddington, the character that he’s playing now, is very, very enigmatic. So he was able to both bring me in as a coworker and make me feel comfortable, and maintain a sense of mystery that was important for us to play the scenes. So he’s just the constant professional.

IGN: So have your writers told you what the deal is and why Red is so fixated on her?

Boone: I have asked them to not give me any information until my character learns that information. So the relationship between Elizabeth and Red, what is going on in her relationship with her family life, all of these mysteries that you come out of the pilot with, are still mysteries to me as well. It helps me as an actor to not know the things that my character doesn’t know. So I’m discovering it as the audience is discovering it, and I think that’s why they’re going to be more interested in going along on the ride with Elizabeth Keen, because they’ll feel like they’re kind of in it together.

IGN: Of course, a lot of people are going to initially say, “He’s got to be her father!”

Boone: What I think about that is that we as a creative group are going to have to justify the oddly paternal feelings that he has for her. But as you know, in life, you can develop paternal and maternal feelings for anyone in your life, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be a daughter or a son. So there are definitely some paternal feelings in the pilot that we’re going to have to justify later. It may be that, and it may be something else. We don’t know.
